An elegant and noble Gothic palace in the heart of Venice, will be the official location of Venice Music Gourmet concert season 2017.
In Castello area, one of the most residential and authentic district of Venice, protected by high and old wall, is hiding one of the most beautiful and full of history palace of the city.
Its current aspect, composed of a main building and other smaller units, dates back to the end of XIII century when Gasparino Morosini decided an improvement of the previous palace that had already been in possession of the lineage of Morosini della Sbarra since the XII century.
Two are the distinctive traits of Palazzo Contarini della Porta di Ferro: the entrance portale enriched by elegant iron studs and the Gothic stairway in the courtyard made by Red Verona marble and Istrian Stone, work by the artist Matteo Raverti. While the iron decorations of the entrance protal get lost during the third and fourth decade of the XIX century (proofs of their existence survive in some manuscripts at Correr Museum), the external stairway represent one of the rare sample outlives nowadays of a typical Gothic stairways very common in Venice in XV century (moreover, the tradition tells that the actual externatl stairways at palazzo Franchetti alla Ca' d'Oro was rebuilt in the fisrt decade of XX century on the framework of that one of palazzo Contarini della Porta di Ferro).
In 1429 the palace was acquired by The Repubblic of Venice, but in 1444 it was purchased by a lineage of the Contarini family, one of the most prominent family in Venice (the tradition tells about the Contarini's was one of the families that partecipate to the election of the first Doge in Eraclea in 697 d.C.); from this moment, this Contarini's lineage choose the title of "Porta di Ferro" (that means, iron doors) and subsequently gave to the Repubbluc three Doges.
When the Porta di Ferro lineage extinguished in 1799, the palace was abandoned and fell in disuse for an half century during which some decorative parts (as the Contarini's emblem too) get lost.
Currently, the palace preserve the same architecture of the noble buildings as in its glorious past characterized by two official entraces (one from the water, the latter from the street), a well cared gardens with fountain, a courtyard with a beautiful puteal in the middle, a wide and luminous hall at the first floor adorned by its original coffered ceiling and an entrance cozy and large.
It's in this magic location, full of history and arts and characterized by a balanced elegance and a refinement in details, that the Venice Music Gourmet concert Season 2017 will set.
The palace is provided by air conditioning and an elevator to help our mobility impaired guest to reach the concert hall at the first floor.
